Which turbo yeast should I use?
| Turbo yeast | Choose it when | Sugar per 25 L wash | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic 6 | You want the reliable all-rounder, or your shed runs warm. Works from 15 to 30°C | 6 kg sugar or Turbo Sugar, or 7 kg dextrose | 4 to 5 days at 30°C, up to 9 to 10 days at 15°C |
| Classic 8 | You want more spirit from one wash. Works from 16 to 30°C | 6 kg for a faster, cleaner ferment, 8 kg for maximum yield | About 7 days at about 22°C on 8 kg |
| Pure | You want the cleanest neutral spirit for gin and vodka, or you run an Air Still. It is the only turbo recommended for the Air Still. Hold 18 to 24°C | 6 kg Turbo Sugar | 6 to 7 days |
| Heat | The air temperature is above 33°C. It tolerates up to 40°C and is the best choice for stacking batches in one fermenter | Follow the sachet | Follow the sachet |
| Fast | You want it done quickly | Follow the sachet | Can ferment out in about 48 hours, depending on temperature and sugar |
Sugar
Dextrose is our pick. It ferments cleaner than table sugar. Turbo Sugar is a blend of dextrose, sugar and carbon that absorbs impurities as it ferments.
Carbon and clear, every wash
Add Turbo Carbon straight after pitching the yeast. When fermentation has finished, use Turbo Clear and give it 24 hours to drop the yeast and carbon out. Never distil a wash with the carbon still in it: the heat releases what the carbon trapped. A carbon filter after distilling is a further polishing step.

How much sugar goes in a turbo yeast wash?
It depends on the yeast. Classic 6 is built for a 25 litre wash with 6kg of sugar or Turbo Sugar, or 7kg of dextrose. Classic 8 takes 6kg of Turbo Sugar for a faster, cleaner ferment or 8kg for more spirit from the same wash. Dissolve the sugar in the fermenter, top up to 25 litres and pitch the yeast, then add Turbo Carbon for an extra layer of filtering during fermentation and a cleaner, purer neutral spirit. Sugar is sold separately.
How long does a turbo yeast wash take to ferment?
It depends on the yeast, the sugar and the temperature. Classic 8 ferments an 8kg wash in about 7 days at around 22C. For a hot summer shed, Classic 6 on a 6kg sugar wash is the best choice: it works across an air temperature range of 15C to 30C and finishes in about 4 to 5 days at 30C.
What do Turbo Carbon and Turbo Clear do?
Turbo Carbon is liquid activated carbon stirred in straight after the yeast, where it traps impurities while the wash ferments. Turbo Clear goes in once fermentation finishes and, within 24 hours, drops around 95% of the suspended yeast and all of the carbon out of the wash. Distilling a wash with the carbon still suspended releases what it trapped, so the clearing step matters.
Do I need all three for every wash?
For a clean neutral wash, yes: yeast, Turbo Carbon and Turbo Clear each do a different job. The Classic 8 pack bundles all three for one 25 litre wash, so you only add sugar. We recommend dextrose, which ferments cleaner than regular sugar (sucrose). Buying in 3 packs or 10 packs brings the cost per wash down.
Which turbo yeast is best for beginners?
Classic 6. It is the all-rounder of the range, works anywhere from 15 to 30°C, and ferments 6 kg of sugar with fewer by-products, so the spirit comes off cleaner.
Which turbo yeast should I use with an Air Still?
Turbo Pure. It is the only turbo yeast recommended for the Air Still.
Which turbo yeast gives the highest ABV?
Classic 8 on 8kg of Turbo Sugar. It carries the biggest sugar load in the range, so you get a stronger wash and more spirit per run: about 4.5 litres at 93% ABV through a Turbo 500, against about 3.7 litres on 6kg. Allow about 7 days at around 22C. If your shed runs hot, Classic 6 is the safer pick.
How long will my order take to arrive?
Metro: usually a few business days. Regional: often a bit longer. You get tracking when it leaves the warehouse.
