How do the bourbon and whiskey recipe kits work?
Each kit pairs a bourbon or whiskey essence, or a combination of essences, with a blend of American oak chips. You add both to 40% ABV spirit and leave it on the oak for 2 to 6 weeks. Kits make between 3 and 4.5 litres depending on the style.
What does oak add to the spirit?
Most of the oak chips we send are a blend of toasted and seasoned American oak, chosen to replicate a charred American oak barrel in far less time. They add colour plus vanilla, caramel, brown sugar and toasted oak notes. Chips have far more surface area than a barrel, so colour and flavour show within 7 to 10 days, with full character developing over a few weeks.
Do I need oak, or is the essence enough?
The essence alone gives you the flavour and colour of the style in the bottle, ready to drink. Oak is the extra step for people who want barrel character on top, and the recipe kits include it so you do not have to work out the quantities.
What spirit do I start with?
Neutral spirit or vodka at 40% ABV. Bought vodka works well and needs no still.
How long will my order take to arrive?
Metro: usually a few business days. Regional: often a bit longer. You get tracking when it leaves the warehouse.
What is your returns policy?
If something isn't right, tell us. We'll sort returns or replacements under Australian Consumer Law and our written policy. No drama.
