The details

Still Spirits Distiller's Nutrient Light Spirits is a 450g tub of yeast nutrient for neutral and white spirit washes. Still Spirits describes it as "especially formulated for reduced off-flavour production during fermentation of alcohol for light/white spirits", which makes it the nutrient for any wash that will become vodka, gin or a base for an essence.

What it does

A sugar wash has no nutrition of its own, so a distiller's yeast fermenting one needs everything supplied: nitrogen, vitamins, trace minerals. Feed it properly and it ferments quickly and cleanly with fewer of the compounds you would otherwise have to strip out on the still or in the carbon filter. There is an antifoam in the blend as well.

How much to use

Still Spirits' rates for a 25 litre wash: sugar wash 150g (up to 15% ABV), potato wash 100g (up to 10% ABV), molasses wash 100g (up to 12% ABV). Dissolve it in the wash before pitching. One tub covers three sugar washes.

When to choose it

Use this when you are pitching a distiller's yeast into a sugar wash for neutral spirit. If you are using a Still Spirits turbo yeast such as Classic 8 or Pure, the nutrient is already in the sachet and you do not need this. For rum or whisky washes, use the Dark Spirits nutrient.
