The details

Still Spirits Turbo Carbon is a 140g sachet of liquid activated carbon that goes into the wash at the same time as the turbo yeast. It works during fermentation, which is the point: it traps impurities as they are produced, before they ever reach the still.

What it does

Still Spirits describes it as "designed to work with our range of Turbo Yeasts and is added to a wash straight after pitching yeast". The carbon's pore structure holds onto compounds that a carbon filter cannot pull out after distillation, so the spirit comes off the still cleaner and needs less polishing at the end.

How to use it

Massage the sachet until it is lump free, open it, and stir the contents into the wash immediately after you add the yeast. One sachet treats one 25 litre wash. Then, and this is the part people skip, use Turbo Clear after fermentation to drop the carbon out of the wash. Still Spirits is explicit about it: distil a wash with the carbon still suspended and the heat releases what the carbon trapped.

When you need it

Every neutral spirit wash, whether the yeast is Classic 8, Pure or a distiller's yeast. Skip it only for flavour-forward washes, such as a rum or whisky mash, where you want the congeners kept.
