Hamish’s Verdict: The biggest variable in your result is fermentation quality, not the still. Use the included Turbo Production Pack, keep your wash temperature stable, and let it clear fully before you distil. A cloudy wash in means a cloudy result out. Get that right and the T500 will handle the rest.

FAQ's TURBO 500
Q:What’s the difference between a T500 Reflux Still and Alembic Still?
The T500 Reflux Still is used for creating high-purity spirits (like vodka). Reflux stills are designed to strip all flavours from the alcohol base.
The Alembic Dome and condenser is a pot still and is designed to extract flavours during the distillation process. It’s most often used as a gin distiller where gin is created by distilling with botanicals or making Rum from a molasses wash or whiskey from a malt wash. It is not as efficient as Turbo 500 still and operates at lower ABV allowing flavour from the wash to be retained.
Q:Is the T500 beginner-friendly?
Yes while the Turbo 500 is incredibly efficient, extracting up to 95% of the potential alcohol from your wash and producing spirit at up to 93% ABV, it’s also designed for simple, hands-on operation.
All you need to do is control the water flow rate to keep the outflow temperature between 50 °C and 60 °C — that’s it.
Don’t be fooled by its beginner-friendly design — this is an elite small-batch distilling system that delivers professional-grade results. In fact, the Turbo 500 by Still Spirits is one of the most accessible and reliable distilling systems available, offering clear instructions and consistently smooth results every time.
Q:What do I need to start distilling with the T500?
You’ll need:
- A T500 kit (boiler + condenser)
- Turbo Yeast Pack or a Turbo Production Pack to ferment your wash.
- A 30lt fermenter
- A Carbon Filter to filter the spirit after distillation to create pure polished neutral spirit.
We offer complete kits with all of this included.
Q:What types of spirits can I make with the Turbo 500?
The T500 is best for any kind spirit. That’s the beauty of the Turbo 500 as it allows you to create pure neutral spirits which becomes the blank canvas to anything you like. Step one: create neutral spirit. Step 2: Add flavour essence back in and choose from Vodka, gin, whiskey, bourbon, rum and many others.
Q:How pure is the alcohol produced by the Turbo 500 Still?
The T500 Reflux Still can reach 93–95% ABV, delivering high-purity ethanol. This makes it ideal for creating smooth vodka or clean bases for flavoured spirits.
Q:Do I need a chiller or cold-water supply?
The Turbo 500 needs a cold-water supply for cooling the condenser. Tap water is perfect and doesn’t need to be chilled. There is also an optional upgrade to a Waterflow regulator which plugs into power and maintains consistent flow rate even if water pressure is variable.
Q:Does the Turbo 500 produce methanol?
No-there is no methanol produced when using the Turbo 500 with a Turbo Yeast wash.
Q:How lo long does it take to run a full batch through a turbo 500 still?
About 4 to 5 hours. Once the power is switched on it may take 45 minutes or more to heat and then you will run your cooling water from the tap. The T500 is designed to run slow and steady for maximum purity and extraction.
Q:How much alcohol is produced with a Turbo 500?
The T500 will extract 95% of all potential alcohol in the spirt wash. Out of a 25lt batch fermented with 6kg of sugar expect 3.5ltrs at over 90% ABV. An 8kg using Turbo Classic 8 yeast will deliver up to 4.5lt at over 90%. Once diluted and filtered you have got 8 to 10ltrs of neutral spirit at 40% alcohol strength.
Q:How long does it take from start to finish?
There are just 4 steps in the process to make the end product - eg a bottle of Tennessee Bourbon or Spiced rum.
Firstly, ferment and clear the wash This takes about a week. Secondly distil the wash to create the spirit alcohol, which will take about 4 to hours. Step three is to dilute and filter the spirit. The slower the better with carbon filtration but expect that to be 4 to 5 hours with a Filter Pro carbon filter.
The final step is to flavour by adding your essence of choice.
Legality
Is it legal to use a still in Australia ?
According to the Excise Act, selling a still or possessing a still larger than 5L—or smaller but used for distilling alcohol—without the appropriate permissions and licenses from the ATO is not allowed. We're here to offer still parts for sale, and your purchase from us includes only these parts, not a complete still.
in Australia, you can use a still of up to 5lt capacity without a distiller's license for either water purification or essential oil extraction.
Please note: You must have a license to produce alcohol using a still in Australia. It is not legal to separate water and alcohol via distillation in a still without a permit.
