Recipe Kit 170 Lashes Pale Ale
Citru forward, clean and well balanced
Share this product:
The legend of James Squire goes that colonial guards flogged the convict brewer for trading hops instead of surrendering them — and that he kept brewing anyway. Our 170 Lashes Pale Ale takes inspiration from the 150 Lashes name and goes one better: bigger hop character, bolder citrus flavour, and a crisper finish. This malt extract kit is built around Amarillo and Cascade hops from the United States, delivering a mildly floral aroma and bold orange and grapefruit character with a lingering clean bitterness. Golden in the glass with a frothy white head, it’s a medium-bodied, well-balanced pale ale that rewards every pour. If you love a quality Australian craft pale ale and want to brew one that impresses from the first sip, this is the kit.
Why brewers love this pale ale kit-
Amarillo and Cascade is one of the great hop combinations in American-influenced pale ale brewing — citrus-forward, clean, and balanced. This kit gives you both varieties in a 50g fresh hop addition, producing the aromatic character that sets craft pale ales apart from standard lager. The Pale and Pilsner malt extract base keeps the colour light and the body crisp, letting the hops do the talking. It’s a well-dialled recipe that consistently produces a great result, and at 4.8–5.2% ABV, it sits squarely in session territory.

FAQ
Is this a clone of 150 Lashes Pale Ale?
This kit is inspired by the James Squire 150 Lashes Pale Ale — but we’ve made it bigger and hoppier, which is why we’ve called it 170 Lashes. It uses Amarillo and Cascade hops to deliver a bolder citrus character and a crisper finish than the original.
What hops are used in this kit?
This kit uses 50g of fresh American Ale Hops — a combination of Amarillo and Cascade. Amarillo is known for its orange and grapefruit character, while Cascade contributes floral and citrus notes. Together they produce the hop-forward aroma and flavour that defines a quality pale ale.
How much beer does this kit make?
This kit produces approximately 21 litres — enough for around 28 x 750ml longnecks or 55 x 330ml stubbies.
Is this kit suitable for someone new to home brewing?
Yes — this is a malt extract kit designed to be accessible. All ingredients come pre-measured, full step-by-step brew day instructions are included in the box, and the American Ale Yeast is very reliable. Someone new to home brewing will find this very achievable.
How long does this beer take to be ready?
Around 10–14 days in the fermenter, then 1–2 weeks in the bottle. Pale ales are best enjoyed fresh — the hop character is brightest in the first few weeks after bottling
