The details
The Super Stout is an original AHB recipe dating back 30 years and one of our most popular dark brews of all time. Smooth, black, rich and malty, with a moderate bitterness that enhances the dryness and the roasted malt flavours. A medium to full creamy body makes it superbly drinkable. It makes 21 litres.
What it is like to brew
What sets the Super Stout apart is a small addition of liquorice extract, a warm, subtly sweet herbal note that rounds out the roast in a way nothing else quite does. Maltodextrin adds body and creaminess, and an English yeast contributes a quiet fruitiness behind the malt. After a few pints you understand why it has lasted 30 years.
Why this kit works
- Liquorice extract for a warm, subtly sweet herbal note that rounds the roast
- Maltodextrin for a full, smooth, creamy body
- English yeast for a quiet fruitiness behind the malt
- A proven, 30-year original AHB recipe, ferments at room temperature
When it makes sense
A reliable choice when you want a smooth, full, classic dry stout with a bit of character. Easy enough for a first dark beer and a long-standing favourite for regulars.

Hamish's verdict
The liquorice is the signature, so do not be tempted to leave it out, it is what makes a Super Stout taste like a Super Stout. Give it a few weeks of conditioning and the body turns properly creamy. Thirty years of brewers cannot be wrong.

What does the liquorice extract do?
It adds a warm, subtly sweet herbal note that rounds out the roasted malt character. It is the signature of the Super Stout and what makes it different from a standard dry stout. It is subtle, not an overpowering liquorice flavour.
What makes this stout creamy?
Maltodextrin, which adds body and mouthfeel without adding sweetness. Combined with the dark malt it gives the Super Stout its full, smooth, creamy character.
Do I need temperature control to brew this stout?
No. This is an ale and ferments well at room temperature (around 18 to 22 degrees C, up to 23 for this kit), so you do not need a temperature-controlled fridge.
How long should I condition a stout before drinking?
Allow 1 to 2 weeks to ferment, then give it a few weeks of conditioning. Stouts genuinely improve with age, and 4 to 6 weeks total lets the roast mellow and the body smooth out.
How much beer does this kit make?
It makes 21 litres, which is roughly 28 longneck bottles (750ml) or about 55 stubbies (330ml).
What equipment do I need to brew this kit?
A fermenter with lid and airlock, a no-rinse sanitiser, a thermometer, a hydrometer, and bottles or a keg for packaging. Our starter equipment kits include everything you need.
