The details
This is our clone recipe built to capture what makes Victoria Bitter iconic: a clean, crisp, full-strength Australian lager-style bitter. It makes 21 litres at 4.4 to 4.6% ABV, with the balanced malt sweetness and resinous hop bite the original is famous for. The key is the hops, Pride of Ringwood, the variety that defined VB for generations.
What it is like to brew
Get the hops and the yeast right and the rest follows. Pride of Ringwood, grown in Tasmania and Victoria, gives the resinous, fruity bitterness that defines this beer. Paired with pale malt and a Californian-style lager yeast fermented cool and clean, you get about as close as you can to cracking a cold one straight off the line, except you brewed it.
Why this kit works
- Pride of Ringwood hops, the variety that defined the original's character
- Pale malt for an authentic clean malt base
- Californian-style lager yeast that ferments clean at ale temperatures
- Full-strength and full-flavoured, a faithful take on an Australian icon
When it makes sense
The kit to brew when you want a faithful, full-strength VB-style bitter at home. Suits beginners after a familiar Australian style and experienced brewers who want a reliable, true-to-style house bitter.

Hamish's verdict
Pride of Ringwood is non-negotiable for this style, and it is what makes the clone read as VB rather than just another bitter. Ferment cool and clean around 18 to 20°C and give it time to condition. Brewed properly, it is genuinely close to the original.

Is this an official Victoria Bitter product?
No. This is an independent clone recipe inspired by Victoria Bitter. It is not affiliated with, licensed by or endorsed by the brand owner. It is our own recipe built to capture the character of the style.
Why does this kit use Pride of Ringwood hops?
Pride of Ringwood, grown in Tasmania and Victoria, is the hop variety that defined VB's character for generations. It gives the resinous, fruity bitterness that makes the clone taste true to the original.
Do I need a fridge or temperature control to brew this?
No. This kit uses a clean lager-style yeast that ferments well at ale temperatures of 18 to 20 degrees C, so a steady room temperature is enough. You get lager-like crispness without a temperature-controlled fridge.
How much beer does this kit make?
It makes 21 litres, which is roughly 28 longneck bottles (750ml) or about 55 stubbies (330ml).
What equipment do I need to brew this kit?
A fermenter with lid and airlock, a no-rinse sanitiser, a thermometer, a hydrometer, and bottles or a keg for packaging. Our starter equipment kits include everything you need.
