The details
The Oatmeal Extra Stout is a strong, full-bodied dark stout that drinks smooth as silk. Oat malt and extra dark malt give it an intense, rounded flavour without harshness, and it pours near black with a chocolate brown head. It makes 21 litres at 4.6 to 4.8% ABV and suits any brewer who wants a serious stout from a straightforward kit.
What it is like to brew
Oats are the secret here. They add a silky, smooth body that ordinary stouts do not have, so the roast and dark malt land soft rather than sharp. UK Goldings hops keep the bitterness gentle and a British ale yeast ferments clean at room temperature, so there is no fridge or special gear needed.
Why this kit works
- Oat malt for a genuinely silky, smooth body
- Generous dark malt for deep roast, coffee and chocolate character
- UK Goldings hops and a British ale yeast for a clean, balanced finish
- Ferments at room temperature (18 to 23 degrees C), no fridge needed
When it makes sense
A good choice when you want a smooth, full stout that is still easy to brew. Works well for newer brewers ready to move past pale styles, and for anyone who finds some stouts too sharp or thin.

Hamish's verdict
The oats are what set this apart, so do not rush it. Give it a few weeks of conditioning and the body turns properly silky and the roast mellows into chocolate and coffee. It is one of the smoothest stouts you can brew from a kit.

Quick answers
Questions about this product, shipping and orders. See the FAQ page for more topics.

What do the oats actually do in this stout?
Oats add a silky, smooth mouthfeel and extra body that a standard stout does not have. They soften the roast character so the coffee and chocolate notes come through rounded rather than sharp.
Do I need temperature control to brew this stout?
No. This is an ale and ferments well at room temperature (around 18 to 22 degrees C, up to 23 for this kit), so you do not need a temperature-controlled fridge.
How long should I condition a stout before drinking?
Allow 1 to 2 weeks to ferment, then give it a few weeks of conditioning. Stouts genuinely improve with age, and 4 to 6 weeks total lets the roast mellow and the body smooth out.
How much beer does this kit make?
It makes 21 litres, which is roughly 28 longneck bottles (750ml) or about 55 stubbies (330ml).
What equipment do I need to brew this kit?
A fermenter with lid and airlock, a no-rinse sanitiser, a thermometer, a hydrometer, and bottles or a keg for packaging. Our starter equipment kits include everything you need.
