The details
The Hill Top Goat Hightail Ale is a modern Australian take on a British-style real ale: a big-bodied amber ale with bold, hoppy citrus character. Two types of light liquid malt extract give it a full, rounded body, crushed crystal malt adds caramel amber colour and sweet malt depth, and Galaxy hops bring the citrus punch. It is inspired by a famous Richmond, Melbourne craft brewery.
What it is like to brew
This is a step up from a basic extract kit, and the result shows. The two liquid malt extracts build a fuller body than a single tin, the crushed crystal malt is steeped for caramel depth and amber colour, and Galaxy hops deliver the citrus character fans of modern Australian craft beer recognise straight away. A premium British ale yeast ties it together with a clean, slightly fruity finish.
Why this kit works
- Two light liquid malt extracts for a full, rounded body
- Crushed crystal malt for caramel amber colour and malt depth
- Galaxy hops for the citrus punch of modern Australian craft beer
- Premium British ale yeast for a clean, slightly fruity finish
When it makes sense
A good pick when you want an amber ale with genuine craft character and are happy to do a simple grain steep. Suits brewers ready to move beyond a basic single-tin kit.

Hamish's verdict
The two liquid malt extracts are what give this its full body, so do not substitute them for a single tin. Steep the crystal malt for the caramel colour and depth, and you get an amber that genuinely tastes like the Richmond craft original it tips its hat to.

Quick answers
Questions about this product, shipping and orders. See the FAQ page for more topics.
Monday to Friday, 9-4pm AEST.We normally get back to you within a day—often sooner.
What beer is this inspired by?
It is a tribute to a well-known amber ale from one of Melbourne's most famous craft breweries in Richmond. It is an independent recipe, not affiliated with or endorsed by that brewery, built to capture the style in your own brew.
Do I need to mash the specialty grains?
No. Crystal and caramel grains are pre-converted, so you simply steep them in hot water in a grain bag, like a large tea bag, before the boil. It adds malt depth and colour with no mashing and no special equipment.
Do I need temperature control to brew this?
No. This is an ale and ferments well at room temperature (around 18 to 23 degrees C), so you do not need a temperature-controlled fridge.
How much beer does this kit make?
It makes 21 litres, which is roughly 28 longneck bottles (750ml) or about 55 stubbies (330ml).
What equipment do I need to brew this kit?
A fermenter with lid and airlock, a no-rinse sanitiser, a thermometer, a hydrometer, and bottles or a keg for packaging. Our starter equipment kits include everything you need.
