The details
The Fancy Pant Amber Ale is an amber that surprises people. It looks like an amber ale, smells like a Pacific ale, and drinks like something you would pay good money for at a craft bar. A crystal malt grain addition gives the toffee amber colour and smooth caramel body, while Australian-grown Galaxy and Ella hops bring a full tropical punch. It makes 21 litres at 4.8 to 5.2% ABV.
What it is like to brew
This one sits at a crossroads: neither a standard amber nor a straight Pacific ale, but its own thing. The crystal malt, steeped before the boil, contributes the toffee and caramel sweetness behind the amber hue and smooth body. Galaxy and Ella then deliver passionfruit, peach, zesty citrus and a spicy, floral edge. The finish is clean and balanced, and it keeps drawing you back.
Why this kit works
- Crystal malt grain addition for toffee amber colour and smooth caramel body
- Australian Galaxy and Ella hops for passionfruit, peach and zesty citrus
- A full-flavoured amber with a clean, balanced finish
- Tropical aroma of a Pacific ale with the malt depth of an amber
When it makes sense
A great choice when you want a tropical, hop-forward beer but with more malt body and colour than a pale or Pacific ale. Suits brewers happy to do a simple grain steep.

Hamish's verdict
Steep the crystal malt properly, it is what gives this its colour and the caramel body that balances all that tropical hop. Galaxy and Ella are a great Aussie pairing here. Brew it fresh and serve it cold, the aroma is the whole point.

Quick answers
Questions about this product, shipping and orders. See the FAQ page for more topics.
Monday to Friday, 9-4pm AEST.We normally get back to you within a day—often sooner.
Is this an amber ale or a Pacific ale?
Both, in a way. It has the toffee colour and caramel malt body of an amber ale, but the Galaxy and Ella hops give it the tropical passionfruit and citrus aroma of a Pacific ale. It is its own crossover style.
Do I need to mash the specialty grains?
No. Crystal and caramel grains are pre-converted, so you simply steep them in hot water in a grain bag, like a large tea bag, before the boil. It adds malt depth and colour with no mashing and no special equipment.
Do I need temperature control to brew this?
No. This is an ale and ferments well at room temperature (around 18 to 23 degrees C), so you do not need a temperature-controlled fridge.
How much beer does this kit make?
It makes 21 litres, which is roughly 28 longneck bottles (750ml) or about 55 stubbies (330ml).
What equipment do I need to brew this kit?
A fermenter with lid and airlock, a no-rinse sanitiser, a thermometer, a hydrometer, and bottles or a keg for packaging. Our starter equipment kits include everything you need.
