The details
The Double Choc Porter is a rich, indulgent dark ale built around a genuine double hit of chocolate. Crystal malts, dark roasted grain and a chocolate cream essence layer cocoa, espresso, biscuit and caramel, while Fuggles hops keep a firm bitter backbone so it never turns cloying. It makes 21 litres of a porter that drinks like a dessert beer.
What it is like to brew
Most chocolate beers rely on roast alone to suggest cocoa. This one uses dark roasted grain plus a chocolate cream essence for a real, layered chocolate character. An English yeast strain rounds it into a smooth, full mouthfeel, and if you want it sweeter you can add up to 500g of lactose to push it towards milk chocolate.
Why this kit works
- Dark roasted grain plus chocolate cream essence for a true double-chocolate hit
- Fuggles hops for a firm bitterness that keeps it from being too sweet
- English yeast for a smooth, rounded, dessert-like mouthfeel
- Optional lactose (up to 500g) to turn it into a milk chocolate porter
When it makes sense
A great pick when you want a rich, sweetish dark beer for cooler months or as a treat. Easy enough for a confident first-timer, and a crowd favourite at any gathering.

Hamish's verdict
Brew it as-is for a balanced chocolate porter, or add up to 500g of lactose at the boil if you want it sweeter and creamier, closer to milk chocolate. Either way, give it a few weeks to settle, the chocolate character deepens noticeably with a little age.

Quick answers
Questions about this product, shipping and orders. See the FAQ page for more topics.
Monday to Friday, 9-4pm AEST.We normally get back to you within a day—often sooner.
Can I make this porter sweeter?
Yes. Add up to 500g of lactose at the boil to push it towards a creamy milk chocolate character. Lactose does not ferment, so it stays as sweetness in the finished beer. Brewed without it, the porter is balanced rather than sweet.
Where does the chocolate flavour come from?
From two sources, which is how it earns the name. Dark roasted grain gives a natural cocoa and espresso character, and a chocolate cream essence adds a second, more direct chocolate hit on top.
Do I need temperature control to brew this stout?
No. This is an ale and ferments well at room temperature (around 18 to 22 degrees C, up to 23 for this kit), so you do not need a temperature-controlled fridge.
How long should I condition a stout before drinking?
Allow 1 to 2 weeks to ferment, then give it a few weeks of conditioning. Stouts genuinely improve with age, and 4 to 6 weeks total lets the roast mellow and the body smooth out.
How much beer does this kit make?
It makes 21 litres, which is roughly 28 longneck bottles (750ml) or about 55 stubbies (330ml).
What equipment do I need to brew this kit?
A fermenter with lid and airlock, a no-rinse sanitiser, a thermometer, a hydrometer, and bottles or a keg for packaging. Our starter equipment kits include everything you need.
