What is Saaz used for?
Czech and continental lagers, especially Bohemian pilsner, plus Belgian ales and wheat beers. It is the definitive noble aroma hop.
Can I use Saaz for bittering?
You can, but the alpha acid is low (typically 3-4.5%), so you will need a lot. Most brewers use a clean high-alpha hop like Magnum for bittering and keep Saaz for its aroma.
What can I substitute for Saaz?
Other noble hops come closest: Tettnang and Hersbrucker share the earthy, spicy character, but none are quite as soft as Czech Saaz.
Is this the real Czech Saaz?
Yes, it is Saaz grown in the Zatec region (Saaz in German), the traditional home of the variety in the Czech Republic.
