When to choose this over alternatives
Choose Motueka when you want zesty lime and lemon rather than heavy tropical fruit. It has some noble parentage, so it keeps a clean, refined edge that suits a New Zealand pilsner beautifully, sitting between a traditional noble hop and a modern fruit bomb. Where Nelson Sauvin brings bold white wine and gooseberry, Motueka is brighter and more citrus-forward. Pair the two for a classic Kiwi hop bill, or use Motueka to freshen up a lager.
Practical notes
Motueka works across the boil but really shows its lime-citrus lift in the whirlpool and dry hop. For a pale ale or NZ pilsner, 20 to 40g of dry hops is a good starting point. It is clean enough to use in lighter styles without overwhelming them. Store cold and sealed, push the air out, and use within 12 months of opening for the freshest citrus aroma.

Monday to Friday, 9-4pm AEST.We normally get back to you within a day—often sooner.
What beer styles is Motueka best for?
New Zealand pilsner, pale ale, lager, saison and wheat beer. It brings a fresh lime and lemon citrus character to cleaner styles.
Can I use Motueka for bittering?
Both. The alpha is moderate (typically 6.5-7.5%), so it bitters cleanly, but it is most valued for the lime-citrus aroma it gives in late and dry-hop additions.
What can I substitute for Motueka?
Other New Zealand hops like Nelson Sauvin (bolder) or Riwaka come closest. For the citrus lift alone, a light hand of Cascade or Citra can stand in.
How much Motueka should I dry hop with?
For a pale ale or NZ pilsner, start around 20g to 40g per 20L. Its clean lime and lemon character suits lighter beers, so you do not need to overdo it.
