When to choose this over alternatives
Choose Fuggles when you want authentic English earthiness in a traditional ale. It is softer, earthier and more woody than the sweeter, floral East Kent Goldings, and the two are classically blended together. If a British recipe just says English hops, Fuggles and Goldings are the pair to reach for. For clean bittering under them, a neutral high-alpha hop like Magnum keeps the character traditional.
Practical notes
Because the alpha is low, you need a decent weight of Fuggles to reach a given bitterness, and it is happiest in the mid-to-late boil and flameout where its earthy aroma survives. It suits multiple small additions across the boil in the traditional English way. You can dry hop with it for a rustic, earthy note, but the effect is gentle. Store cold and sealed; low-alpha hops fade faster, so use it fresh for the best aroma.

What beer styles is Fuggles best for?
English bitter, ESB, brown ale, mild, porter and stout. It is the traditional earthy English aroma hop, usually paired with Goldings.
Can I use Fuggles for bittering?
You can, but the alpha is low (typically 3.5-5.5%), so you will need a fair amount. Most brewers use it for aroma and flavour and reach for a clean high-alpha hop like Magnum for the bittering charge.
What can I substitute for Fuggles?
East Kent Goldings is the traditional partner and closest substitute, though it is sweeter and more floral. Willamette is a US-grown relative with a similar gentle, earthy character.
How much Fuggles should I use?
For aroma, add it in the last 15 minutes of the boil and at flameout, using a generous weight because the alpha is low. Dry hop lightly, around 15g to 30g per 20L, for a rustic earthy note.
