Do I need temperature control to brew this lager?
No, the Californian lager yeast performs best at 18-20°C. Just make sure you keep the fermentation under 20°C and you will get a clean, crisp result.
What is Saaz hop?
Saaz is the traditional noble hop of Czech pilsners, grown in the Žatec region of Czechia for centuries. It delivers a distinctive spicy, herbal, and slightly floral aroma with very low bitterness, making it ideal for clean lager styles.
What's the difference between Bohemian Pilsner and German Pilsner?
Bohemian (Czech) Pilsner uses softer water and has a slightly fuller body and lower bitterness than German Pilsner. Both use noble hops, but the Bohemian version is typically maltier and softer on the palate.
How long should I lager this beer?
After primary fermentation at 12-15°C (2-3 weeks), cold condition (lager) at 2-4°C for a minimum of 4 weeks, 6-8 weeks is better. This cold conditioning step is what gives pilsner its exceptional clarity and clean flavour.
